Sallawish Ozette, wood craver, painter, silver smith, canoe builder, totem pole carver, glass sculptor, drum maker and designer. Born in 1974 Neah Bay, Washington a member of the Makah Tribe on the northwest trip of the north Olympic Pennisula.
He started carving wooden masks in 1984 at the age of 10. By the age of 16 took an apprenticeship under legendary Makah artist Greg Colfax for 2 years. Turned professional and started selling his work shortly after.
The Smithsonian Institute Museum of the American Indian New York City, selected him for a piece in the permanent collection. The piece was a bone game set in the gaming collection. He was chosen as his grandfather Frank Alabush had a piece in the collection. Working hard to develop his own style over the course of nine years resulted in winning best of show in Indian Art Northwest.
Sallawish is known for pushing the artist envelope by developing technics and strategies to realize modern Indian art.
